At J. David Jewelry our own goldsmiths restore heirloom and antique jewelry at three Tulsa showrooms, in Broken Arrow, South Tulsa and Brookside. We bring a piece back to wearing: worn foundations, tired settings, the shine, without taking away what made it hers. Bring it in and we will look at it together.
The band is thinner on one side, because of the way she held things. The engraving has gone soft under sixty years of her hand. One small diamond is missing, and nobody remembers when.
None of that is damage in the ordinary sense. It is the record of a life. Restoration is the work of making a piece safe to wear again without erasing the person who wore it.
Polishing is the easiest thing to do to an old ring, and the hardest to undo. It removes metal, and with the metal go the fine things: hand engraving, the tiny beaded edges, the soft darkness in the recesses that gives an old piece its depth.
So we begin with a conversation about what to keep. Some guests want a mirror finish. Some want the ring to look exactly as it does in a photograph from 1962. Both are right. It is yours, and you should recognize it when it comes home.
A foundation worn thin can be rebuilt. A crown can be retipped or rebuilt, so a gem is held by metal again and not by habit. Clasps, hinges and links can be made sound. A missing diamond can be replaced with one chosen to sit quietly beside its neighbors, and we can match antique diamonds and gems, so what is replaced looks as if it was always there. Detail that has worn away can sometimes be recut by hand.
The work is done by our own goldsmiths, on our own benches.
Some things cannot be brought back. A chipped diamond cannot be mended; sometimes it can be recut a little smaller, and sometimes it is better replaced. Some antique settings are too fragile to work on without remaking them. When that is the case, we say so before any work starts, and we tell you what we would do if it were ours.
If you do not know what a piece is, or what it is worth, find out before anything is changed. An appraisal is the place to start.
And if the piece will never be worn the way it is, there is another road. Her diamond can live in a ring that is yours. That is custom design, and it begins with the same conversation.
There are two ways to start, and neither is the wrong one. Bring the piece to any of our three Tulsa showrooms and we look it over with you — that is the solid answer, because an old piece keeps its secrets until it is in hand. Or text us about it, and we’ll do our best from what you tell us.
Bring the piece to any of our three showrooms, along with whatever you know of its story. A goldsmith will look at it with you and tell you honestly what it needs. The estimate is free, and nothing starts until you say yes.
When a piece is past wearing as it is, its gold and gems can become something new: see custom design and What Your Old Gold Is Actually Worth. A restored piece is worth a fresh appraisal.
Only if you want it to. Some guests want a mirror finish, and some want the ring to look the way it does in the old photographs. We talk through what to keep before any work begins, because polishing removes metal and cannot be undone.
Usually, yes. Hand engraving, beaded edges and the soft patina of an old piece are the first things lost to heavy polishing, so we work around them and tell you beforehand what will change and what will not.
If you do not know what the piece is or what it is worth, yes. It is wise to find out before anything is altered, and our appraiser can help.
A missing diamond can be replaced with one chosen to sit quietly beside the originals, and we can match antique diamonds and gems. A chipped diamond cannot be mended; sometimes it can be recut a little smaller, and sometimes it is better replaced. We will show you the choices.
Yes. Bring in any piece, wherever it came from. A goldsmith will look at it with you, and the estimate is free.
It depends on the piece and its condition. We will tell you what to expect before we begin.

Every heirloom begins with a story. Hear from the families who let us be a part of theirs.
Katelyn helped me resize and refresh my wedding ring. She was knowledgeable, professional, and incredibly sweet. She made the experience easy and enjoyable, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. I highly recommend asking for Katelyn
Had a fantastic experience at J David! Bought an engagement ring last year and a wedding band this year. Maelei and Susan were especially super helpful and patient with us and found us the perfect matches!
One big request I had for Hayley was to make sure any leftover gold from the ring was returned to me. Not only did she make sure I got the gold, but Scott even turned it into a small pendant!
