At J. David Jewelry we prepare insurance appraisals in Tulsa: a full Insurance Appraisal Report, accepted directly by insurers, written by a Graduate Gemologist through GIA with formal accreditation through Gemological Services International. Pieces bought here take about thirty days. Everything else is seen on Appraisal Days at the end of each month, at one of our showrooms.
Most people come for one reason: the insurance company asked. A homeowner’s or renter’s policy covers jewelry only up to a small limit, and anything worth more needs its own line on the policy, with a document behind it. That document is an appraisal. It describes the piece, grades the diamond or gemstone, and states a replacement value, so that if the ring is lost, the insurer knows what to replace and what it will cost.
A good appraisal is also the only honest description most people will ever have of what they own. Cut, color, clarity, carat weight, metal, the maker’s marks. Years from now, when the ring passes to someone else, that page is what tells them what it is.
Our appraisals are prepared by a Graduate Gemologist through GIA, with formal accreditation through Gemological Services International. The diamond is graded under the loupe and the scope, the metal is tested, the piece is weighed and photographed, and the report is written to the standard insurers expect. Every piece is graded in hand by the appraiser who signs the report.
You receive a full Insurance Appraisal Report. It is accepted directly by insurers, so you can send it to your agent as it is. It carries a description of the piece, the grading of each diamond and gemstone, the metal and its weight, a photograph, the replacement value, and the appraiser’s credential and signature.
If the piece was bought here, leave it with us at any showroom and the report is ready in about thirty days. We text you when it is.
If the piece came from somewhere else, an inheritance, another jeweler, another city, we see it on Appraisal Days, held at one of our showrooms at the end of each month, usually the last Thursday and Friday, by appointment. Text us and we will put you on the list. Bring any paperwork the piece already has, a grading report or an older appraisal, if there is one. It helps.
There are two ways to start, and neither is the wrong one. Bring the piece to any of our three Tulsa showrooms and the appraiser sees it under the loupe — that is the solid answer, because the piece is in hand. Or start by text and schedule an appointment, and we’ll do our best to answer from what you tell us: what to expect, how long it takes, and what it costs — which depends on the piece and the number of diamonds or gemstones to grade, and which we tell you before anything starts.
Values move. Gold and platinum prices change, diamond prices change, and an appraisal from ten years ago will not replace the ring today. Insurers generally like to see a current appraisal every few years. If yours is older than that, or if you have never had one, bring the piece in.
For gold you no longer wear, What Your Old Gold Is Actually Worth explains how its value is set. A piece that needs work first goes to repair.

The piece, and any paperwork it already has, such as a diamond grading report, a previous appraisal or a receipt. None of it is required, and all of it helps.

Every heirloom begins with a story. Hear from the families who let us be a part of theirs.
Katelyn helped me resize and refresh my wedding ring. She was knowledgeable, professional, and incredibly sweet. She made the experience easy and enjoyable, and I couldn’t be happier with the results. I highly recommend asking for Katelyn
Had a fantastic experience at J David! Bought an engagement ring last year and a wedding band this year. Maelei and Susan were especially super helpful and patient with us and found us the perfect matches!
One big request I had for Hayley was to make sure any leftover gold from the ring was returned to me. Not only did she make sure I got the gold, but Scott even turned it into a small pendant!
